Worksafe BC & OHSA Fall Protection Inspection Requirements

In Canada, PPE and fall protection equipment must be inspected by a competent person at least once every 12 months.

Worksafe BC’s OHS Regulation Part 11: Fall Protection regulations state that employers must use fall protection systems when there is a risk of falling from a height of 3 meters or more, or when there is a risk of injury from falling below 3 meters.

Under CSA Regulations, your Class A Self retracting lifelines must be recertified annually.

OHSA regulations require the use of appropriate equipment that meets their stringent safety standards, mandates regular inspection & maintenance of equipment, and for certain types of equipment — formal inspection & certification by an engineer.

Key Steps of Fall Protection Equipment Inspection: Rope, SRL & Harness Inspection

Rope Inspection

  1. Visual Examination

In the first step of our meticulous rope inspection, we carefully examine every inch of the equipment for any signs of wear or damage. Our certified inspectors have an eagle eye for even the slightest irregularities, leaving no room for compromise when it comes to safety.
  1. Verify Labeling and Certification

At Ikamotsiipi Carleton Rescue, we understand the significance of reliable safety gear. During the inspection, we double-check the rope’s labeling and certification to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  1. Evaluate Compatibility

A fall protection system is only as strong as its weakest link. In the third step of our rope inspection, we thoroughly assess the compatibility of your equipment with other components to guarantee the safety of your entire fall protection system.

Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) Inspection

When it comes to fall arrest equipment and personal fall arrest systems, self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of your team. At Ikamotsiipi Carleton Rescue, we understand the significance of these devices, and our rigorous SRL inspection process is designed to keep your workers safe in every situation.

  1. Verify the Functionality of the Retracting Mechanism

The retracting mechanism is the heart of an SRL, allowing smooth movement while maintaining constant tension on the lifeline.

During our SRL inspection, we thoroughly assess the functionality of this crucial component. Our certified inspectors ensure that the retraction and extension operate flawlessly — minimizing the risk of unexpected stops or unintentional slack that could compromise your team’s safety.
  1. Check the Integrity of the Lifeline for Cuts or Fraying

The lifeline of an SRL is the lifeline for your workers. We leave no room for uncertainty in its condition.

Our inspectors carefully examine the lifeline for any signs of cuts, fraying, or damage. Even the tiniest imperfection can have significant consequences, which is why our meticulous inspection process ensures that your SRL’s lifeline is in pristine condition.
  1. Inspect the Braking System for Effectiveness

The braking system is the ultimate safeguard in an SRL, instantly engaging to stop a fall in its tracks. Our inspection process includes a thorough evaluation of this critical mechanism to verify its effectiveness.

We take the time to ensure that your SRL’s braking system is responsive and reliable — providing your team with the confidence they need to work at heights without hesitation.

Safety Harness Inspection

Our fall protection harness inspection team will ensure that your equipment is always in top-notch condition, keeping your team secure when working at heights or in hazardous conditions.

  1. Examine Webbing for Signs of Wear or Chemical Damage

In the first stage of our meticulous safety harness inspection, our experienced inspectors examine the webbing for any signs of physical wear or chemical damage.

Over time, exposure to harsh environments or chemical substances can weaken the integrity of the webbing and compromise its ability to protect your workers in case of a fall. We leave no stone unturned — carefully assessing every inch to identify even the slightest wear or damage.
  1. Verify the Condition of Buckles and D-Rings

Buckles and D-rings are critical components of safety harness inspections, playing a vital role in securing the harness and supporting the wearer. During our inspection, we pay special attention to these components, verifying their condition and functionality.

Any signs of wear, corrosion, sharp edges, or structural issues are promptly identified — ensuring that your safety harness remains dependable in any situation.
  1. Check for Proper Fit and Adjustments

Whether it’s a full body harness or a body belt, a proper fit is crucial for maximum protection and comfort. Our inspection process includes a thorough check for the correct fit.

We understand that every worker is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach won’t suffice. Our inspectors ensure that each safety harness is adjusted to fit the individual wearer perfectly — minimizing the risk of discomfort or improper positioning during work.

Other Fall Protection Equipment

In addition to safety harnesses, we also inspect other fall protection equipment to provide a comprehensive safety solution for your team. Whether it’s lanyards, lifelines, or anchors — our meticulous inspection process covers all the crucial aspects to ensure your equipment is reliable and in compliance with Canadian safety standards.
